Elanco believes that sustainability is essential for the future of our planet and its inhabitants. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a framework for addressing global challenges such as hunger, poverty and climate change. By moving toward alignment with the SDGs, Elanco can contribute to a more sustainable future by promoting production, improving access to food and supporting the health and well-being of both animals and people. In addition, aligning with the SDGs can help Elanco meet the expectations of customers, investors and other stakeholders who are increasingly focused on sustainability and social responsibility.

We have evaluated Elanco’s business activities, initiatives and goals for alignment with the SDGs and supporting targets. The graphic and tables below reflect SDG targets for which we’ve identified slight, moderate or significant impact.

End poverty in all its forms everywhere.

Target 1.5: By 2030, build the resilience of the poor and those in vulnerable situations and reduce their exposure and vulnerability to climate-related extreme events and other economic, social, and environmental shocks and disasters.
  • Between 2017 and early 2022, Elanco’s East Africa Growth Accelerator (EAGA) initiative helped improve the productivity of more than 273,000 small-scale livestock producers by distributing high-quality, affordable veterinary products in adjusted small pack sizes, facilitating access to feed additives and educating small producers.
  • Based on the success of EAGA, in 2022 Elanco and GalvMed (The Global Alliance for Livestock Veterinary Medicine), partnered to create “Managing Animal Health and Acaricides for a Better Africa” (MAHABA) which is designed to support small-scale producers by defining and implementing strategies to effectively manage tick infestations in cattle.
  • In 2023 and 2024 Elanco will continue to promote training and education for small-scale producers

End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.

Target 2.3: By 2030, double the agricultural productivity and incomes of small-scale food producers, in particular women, Indigenous peoples, family farmers, pastoralists, and fishers, including through secure and equal access to land, other productive services, markets and opportunities for value addition and non-farm employment.

Target 2.4: By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agriculture practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, which strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding and other disasters and that progressively improve land and soil quality.

  • We make a meaningful contribution to SDG 2 Target 2.3 through our prior East Africa Growth Accelerator (EAGA) and current Managing Animal Health and Acaricides for a Better Africa (MAHABA) initiatives in Africa, as we aim to educate and improve the productivity of small-scale producers through informational resources and access to animal health products.
  • Numerous Elanco products and services align with Target 2.4 by improving the sustainability of animal agriculture. We work with farmers, veterinarians and other stakeholders to provide innovative solutions that help to improve animal health and welfare, while also reducing the environmental impact of livestock production. Our approach is based on a deep understanding of the complex interactions between animals, humans and the environment – and we are constantly striving to develop new technologies and practices that promote sustainable agriculture and enhance the resilience of farming communities around the world. Through our efforts, we aim to progressively secure food supply for future generations.

Target 3.9.b: Support the research and development of vaccines and medicines for the communicable and non-communicable diseases that primarily affect developing countries, provide access to affordable essential medicines and vaccines, in accordance with the Doha Declaration on the TRIPS Agreement and Public Health, which affirms the right of developing countries to use to the full the provisions in the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights regarding flexibilities to protect public health, and, in particular, provide access to medicines for all.
  • As a leading advocate for the responsible use of antimicrobials in animal health, instituted a multi-faceted 8-point plan in 2014 to help increase responsible antibiotic stewardship, reduce the need for antibiotics and to replace them with alternatives. We believe it is essential to preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics for both human and animal health. We work tirelessly to promote responsible use of antibiotics in animal agriculture, and we have developed a comprehensive approach to antimicrobial stewardship that includes education, research, and collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Elanco is a leading manufacturer of salmonella and rabies vaccines which reduce human vector-borne disease. Salmonella is a common bacterium that can cause food poisoning in humans. By vaccinating animals against salmonella, we can reduce the risk of human exposure and illness. Rabies, on the other hand, is a deadly virus that can be transmitted from animals to humans through bites or scratches. Vaccinating animals against rabies helps protect both animals and humans from this dangerous disease. Elanco is committed to improving the health and well-being of both animals and humans through innovative vaccines and other products.

Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.

Target 12.3: By 2030, halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses.

Target 12.4: Achieve the environmentally sound management of chemicals and all wastes throughout their life cycle, in accordance with agreed international frameworks, and significantly reduce their release to air, water and soil to minimize their adverse impacts on human health and the environment.

Target 12.5: By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse.

Target 12.6: Encourage companies, especially large and transnational companies, to adopt sustainable practices and to integrate sustainability information into their reporting cycle.

  • Our primary business, improving animal health, contributes markedly to SDG 12 Target 12.3 by helping livestock producers upstream in the food value chain reduce disease-related losses through flea and tick control, vaccinations and nutritious feed additives. This, in turn, can help reduce the amount of food waste that occurs in the animal agriculture industry. When animals are healthy, they are more likely to reach their full potential with less waste.
  • We contribute to SDG 12 Targets 12.4 and 12.5 in our manufacturing operations by working to reduce waste generation wherever possible. In addition, Elanco products and services help animal protein producers reduce emissions such as methane and ammonia.
  • We contribute to SDG 12 Target 12.6 by demonstrating sustainable internal business practices. We strive to minimize our environmental impact by reducing our energy consumption, waste generation, and carbon footprint. We have implemented recycling programs, energy-efficient lighting and equipment, and water conservation measures across our facilities. Additionally, we prioritize sustainable sourcing and responsible supply chain management to ensure that our products and services are produced and delivered in an environmentally and socially responsible way. We believe that our sustainable practices not only benefit the planet, but also contribute to our long-term success as a company.
