Elwood's proximity to Kansas City is an added advantage. Elwood is located about 30 miles northwest of Kansas City, Missouri. This means that there are plenty of opportunities to explore the city's cultural attractions, restaurants, and entertainment options during leisurely time. Some popular tourist attractions in Kansas City include the National World War I Museum and Memorial, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Union Station (historic train station and entertainment hub), and the Country Club Plaza shopping district.


Elwood is also located near several state parks and lakes, including the Weston Bend State Park, the Lewis and Clark Lake, Clinton Lake, and Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area.
